Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP) 

清华大学,Tsinghua University, Beijing

Formerly known as the “Stanford Center”, IUP is the premier U.S.- sponsored Chinese language program located in Beijing on the campus of Tsinghua University.  This program is for WM students who have completed CHIN201 and CHIN202[1], and are ready to commit four to eight months to rigorous language study. Students are to take placement tests upon arrival in Beijing, and class assignments are made on the basis of each student’s language background and performance on placement tests.

  • Academic offerings: highly intensive Mandarin Language instruction with small-group tutorials.
  • Length of program: 32-week Academic Year Program, 16-week Semester Program.
  • Highlights of program: All IUP instructors are trained in the IUP method and closely mentored. Guaranteed 1:3 teacher-student ratio for group classes.  Student program report.
  • Eligibility: 2 years of college-level Mandarin or equivalent.

Associated Colleges in China (ACC) Intensive Language and Culture Program

民族大学,Minzu University of China, Beijing

ACC in Beijing is a Chinese language program administered by Hamilton College and hosted by Minzu University of China. This program is for students who have completed CHIN 101 and 102 in WM with superior grades OR who have completed CHIN201 and CHIN202 in WM or other American universities. Class assignments in ACC will be made based on students’ performance on placement tests. The program boasts a rigorous learning schedule and individualized instruction. 

  • Academic offerings: Mandarin language instruction in small groups and individual class with a rigorous schedule.
  • Length of program: Fall, spring or any combination of multiple terms.
  • Highlights of program: Language pledge is applied and upheld by all professors and field director. Language practicum allows students to use Chinese with local citizens. All students have host families.
  • Eligibility: One or two years of college-level language instruction.

CET Program

北京教育学院,Beijing Institute of Education (BIE), Beijing, or

哈尔滨科技大学,Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Harbin,

CET offers language intensive program for students at all levels of Chinese at separate locations: in Beijing or Harbin. CET in Beijing is for all students, from beginners to those with heritage background, who enjoy studying Mandarin and experiencing China in China’s capital and cultural center.  CET in Harbin is for students who have completed CHIN201 and CHIN202 in WM and wish to bring their Mandarin to a new level, and at the same time, start to conduct research through one-on-one tutorial offered by the program.

  • Academic offerings: Intensive Mandarin language instruction, elective courses in economics, history and political science.
  • Length of program: Fall and spring terms.
  • Highlights of program: Full-time Language pledge, Chinese roommate, auxiliary language classes in Chinese TV, character writing, newspaper, etc.
  • Eligibility: No language prerequisite for the fall and spring in CET at Beijing.  4 semesters of previous Chinese language study in CET at Harbin.

C.V Starr-Middlebury Schools Abroad in China

Middlebury College, in cooperation with CET, operates the C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China at three sites: Beijing, Hangzhou and Kunming.  This immersion program is for WM students who have completed CHIN201 and CHIN202. While three sites all offer intensive mandarin instruction, Hangzhu site features a broad-based curriculum in humanities, including history, art and literature, religious studies, foreign relations, and Chinese social issues. The multi-ethnic city of Kunming will attract students interested in anthropology, social sciences, and environmental sciences. The program in Beijing is designed for students with interests in political science, economics, and arts.

  • Academic offerings: Intensive Mandarin language instruction, elective courses in economics, political science, history, arts, environmental sciences, anthropology, etc.
  • Length of program: Fall, winter and spring terms.
  • Highlights of program: Full-time Language pledge, Chinese roommate, one-on-one tutorial; All courses, including content-based electives are in Chinese.
  • Eligibility: At least 4 semesters (5 preferred) of previous Chinese language study.

The Alliance for Global Education: Intensive Chinese language Program

复旦大学,Fudan University, Shanghai

The Alliance for Global Education at Fudan University in Shanghai offers two tracks: Contemporary Chinese Society and Language and Intensive Chinese Language. The Intensive Language Program is for students who have completed CHIN201 and CHIN202 and want to focus on learning language while they are in China.  

  • Academic offerings: Intensive Mandarin language instruction with 20 class hours per week and elective courses. 
  • Length of program: Semester or academic year.
  • Highlights of program: Full-time Language pledge; Chinese roommate.
  • Eligibility: Students must have completed four semesters of college level Chinese. Minimum GPA of 3.0.

IES Language Intensive Program in Beijing

This is a program with strong Chinese language component for students who have completed CHIN101 and CHIN102 in WM or two semesters of college-level Chinese at other U.S institute. The program also offers individualized program for heritage students.

  • Academic offerings: Intensive Mandarin language instruction, English taught Chinese area studies seminar with research & fieldwork; Chinese-taught courses is available for more advanced students.
  • Length of program: Fall, spring, or academic year.
  • Highlights of program: Private tutorials, grammar classes, small drill sessions, and internship options.
  • Eligibility: 2 semesters of college-level Chinese.

Chinese Studies Institute (CSI) Immersion Track

北京大学,Beijing University, Beijing

Formerly known as the “Beijing Institute of Asian Studies”, CSI was founded by American University in 1985 and later operates as an independent entity since 2004. CSI locates on the campus of Beijing University. The immersion track of CSI language program is for students who have completed CHIN102 or above and want to devote themselves to language training full time.

This program offers multi-level of language studies. Students are to take placement tests upon arrival in Beijing, and class assignments are made on the basis of each student’s language background and performance on placement tests.

  • Academic offerings: intensive Mandarin Language instruction through 27 hours in class instruction per week and after class activities and homework.
  • Length of program: spring semester (January - May), fall Semester (August - December)
  • Highlights of program: small class capped at 5; language pledge is enforced inside and outside the classroom during weekdays.
  • Eligibility: one years of college-level Mandarin or equivalent.
  • Housing: off campus hotel, off campus apartment, homestay.
