Kinesiology & Health Sciences

Kinesiology (the study of human movement) & Health Sciences, prepares students for a wide variety of academic and professional pursuits.  An emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion in society is opening opportunities in a variety of health related areas including physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant, nursing, traditional and complementary medicine and nutrition. With the significant expansion of the fitness industry, there are many opportunities in Exercise Physiology, Sport Psychology, Geriatric Physical Education, Sports Communication, Sports Administration, Sports Marketing, Sports Management, and Wellness.

Within the Department of Kinesiology & Health Sciences, students may choose to receive a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. In addition, students may also select one of the following concentrations:

  1. Health (B.A.)
  2. Health Sciences (B.S.)
  3. Pre-med (B.S.)

Coursework in each of these concentrations may include the following: Introduction to Kinesiology & Health Sciences, Introduction to the Human Body, Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, Motor Learning, Science of Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Cardiovascular Physiology, Physiology of Aging, Physiology of Obesity, Exercise in Public Health, Foundations in Epidemiology, Introduction to Clinical Practice, Health Ethics, as well as many others.  In addition, students are encouraged to seek additional experience either through research or internship opportunities.

Over the last 5 years, approximately 80% of graduating Kinesiology & Health Sciences majors entered graduate or professional schools. Of those entering professional schools, approximately 80% were in the allied health fields and 20% in medical schools. Thus, the typical major in this department is pursuing a career in a medical, health, or research profession.

Michael Deschenes, Recipient of Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence

Mike Deschenes PulmeriThe awards are given to 20 William & Mary faculty members each year in recognition of their exemplary achievements in teaching, research and service. All recipients receive $10,000, which is used for research, summer salaries or other stipends associated with scholarly endeavor.
