Background
Craig Canning holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University. His primary research interests lie in modern Chinese history and U.S.-China relations. At William and Mary he has offered a wide range of courses on modern Chinese and Japanese history, East Asian civilization, and Sino-American relations as well as Chinese and Japanese literature. In 1981 he received the College’s Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award. While Associate Director of the Wendy and Emery Reves Center for International Studies from 1990-98 (and Interim Director in 1998-99), Canning contributed to the development of a distinctive program in International Studies at William and Mary. A Fulbright grant recipient in 2000-2001, he served as Director of Research and Development at the Hong Kong-America Center and visiting scholar in the History Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In fall semester 2004 and again in 2009 he taught U.S.-China relations history in the China Studies Program affiliated with the History Department at Peking University. Canning is a member of the Association for Asian Studies and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
