  • New Student Registration

August 19 

  • Deadline to sign up with Gail Conner email for Fall Semester Foreign Language Exam

August 22

  • 9:00 - 11:45 AM A&S Office of Research and Graduate Studies: New Graduate Student Orientation (Mandatory) - Chesapeake B and C, Sadler Center (refreshments will be provided)
  • 12 p.m.-4:50 p.m. A&S Office of Research and Graduate Studies: New T.A/T.F. Orientation and Training (working lunch provided); Chesapeake A, Tidewater B, James and York Rooms, Sadler Center.

August 23

  • 11:30 a.m. History Department Orientation all new graduate students Dept. Library, Blair 206

 August 24

  • First day of classes - Add/Drop begins
  • PhD students, after their comps, must submit dissertation prospectus to their dissertation advisor.

  • Foreign Language Examination

  • Last day to add or drop courses for fall semester

  • Labor Day - Classes Meet

  • If your time to complete your dissertation expires between June and November, the deadline to request an extension is on or before November 14th.

  • Submit one copy of theses/dissertations, along with template pages for review for formatting errors to Betty Ann Jones at the Office of Graduate Studies and Research (Stetson House) for January degree (includes terminal MAs).  See the Physical Standards for Theses & Dissertations

  • Last day of Fall classes
  • Deadline for Early American and U.S. MA students to submit their thesis prospectus and thesis section draft to their thesis advisor for approval
  • Deadline for Comparative MA students to submit their thesis prospectus draft and fully annotated bibliography to their thesis advisor for approval
  • ABDs teaching in the spring must have held their dissertation colloquia by the completion of the Fall 2011 term.

December 3 - January 17

  • Schedule adjustment for continuing students

  • Three copies of approved theses/dissertations, along with binding receipt and all other paperwork due to Betty Ann Jones at the Office of Graduate Studies and Research (Stetson House) for January conferral of degrees. (See the Physical Standards for Theses & Dissertations)

  • Deadline for 6th Year Fellowship Applications

  • Last day to add or drop courses for spring semester
  • Minor Research Grant Applications for Spring semester due in Grants Office TENTATIVE

  • Withdrawal period begins--see Graduate Registrar for additional information/assistance

February 1

  • Thesis prospectus and thesis section to committee and the graduate program coordinator in prep for MA Oral for Early American or U.S. History students.
  • Thesis prospectus and fully annotated bibliography to committee and the graduate program coordinator in prep for MA Oral for Comparative and Transnational History students.

  • All requirements for the MA degree (includes all coursework completed and thesis approved by committee) must be completed for PhD students in their first year at W&M and MA/PhD students in their 2nd year at W&M otherwise Fall stipend will be forfeited. William and Mary terminal MA students in their 2nd year must also have all requirements for the master's degree completed (includes thesis approved by committee and language exam passed) or request an extension in their time to degree from the Graduate Director email

  • Last day to submit application for summer stipend. Note: For students taking the doctoral comprehensive examinations in the Spring 2012 this application must include tentative readings lists for your comprehensive examination fields.
  • Deadline for establishing comprehensive qualifying committee for doctoral students taking these exams next spring (2013).
  • Last day for Comparative and Transnational History students M.A. comprehensive examinations.

  • Last day for doctoral students in 4th year of graduate study to submit names of dissertation advisers and tentative dissertation topics (with MA year as "first year", then 2nd year is course work, 3rd year, 1st term is course work, 3rd year, 2nd term is comprehensive examination)
  • If the time to complete your dissertation expires between December and May, the deadline to request an extension is on or before April 13th. 

April 20
