Non-degree Seeking Students: Application for Graduate Courses

Students who seek to take graduate courses in history as "Non-degree Seeking" students at the College must submit the following materials to the Graduate Director of the history department by at least three weeks prior to the start of the term in which they seek to enroll:

• Resume/CV
• Undergraduate and Graduate Transcripts (if applicable) - Copies of transcripts are acceptable.
• 500 word personal statement on their reasons for seeking admission to graduate classes.
• Writing sample of no more than ten (10) pages
• List of references

Usually students must have at least 12 undergraduate or previous graduate history credits.

Priority in history graduate courses will be given to students who have been admitted to the history (or other William and Mary) graduate program(s).

While the Graduate Director will evaluate the materials submitted by potential non-degree seeking students in relation to the basic requirements of the history department graduate program, the instructor of the course requested by the unclassified student will have the final say on whether or not s/he will allow the student admittance to the course.

Students who have been accepted into the NIAHD Program are exempt from this requirement unless they wish to take a history graduate course that is not sponsored by the NIAHD Program. 

Permission to enroll in a graduate history course as an non-degree seeking student does not imply admission to any graduate program at William and Mary.
