Background

Craig Canning holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University. His primary research interests lie in the history of modern China, Sino-Japanese relations and U.S.-China relations. At William and Mary he has offered a wide range of courses on modern Chinese and Japanese history, East Asian civilization, and Sino-American relations as well as Chinese and Japanese literature. In 1981 he received the College’s Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award. While Associate Director of the Wendy and Emery Reves Center for International Studies from 1990-98 (and Interim Director in 1998-99), Canning helped develop a distinctive program in International Studies. A Fulbright grant recipient in 2000-2001, he served as Director of Research and Development at the Hong Kong-America Center and visiting scholar in the History Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In fall semester 2004 he taught U.S.-China relations at Peking University in the History Department and Beijing Program of Asian Studies. Canning is a member of the Association for Asian Studies and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
