The 2009 Lyon Gardiner Tyler Lecture Series will take place on Friday, November 6, from 3 to 5:50 PM in Washington 2001.  The theme for this year's series is "Spain and Its Wider World, from Medieval to Modern."  This year's speakers are Professor Jeffrey Bowman of Kenyon College, author of Proof, Property, and Dispute in Catalonia around the Year 1000 (Cornell, 2004); Professor Maria Portuondo of The Johns Hopkins University, author of Secret Science: Spanish Cosmography and the New World (Chicago, 2009); and Professor Christopher Schmidt-Nowara of Fordham University, author of The Conquest of History: Spanish Colonialism and National Histories in the Nineteenth Century (Pittsburgh, 2008).

 

The papers to be presented at this year's Tyler Lecture Series are:

- Jeffrey Bowman, "Matrona's Two Spains: Women Judges, Widows and Their Wider Worlds"

- Maria Portuondo, "Cosmography and the Challenge of the New World"

- Christopher Schmidt-Nowara, "Wilberforce Spanished: Origins of Spanish Antislavery, 1763-1814"

 

Lyon Gardiner Tyler was seventeenth president of the College of William & Mary.  In 2001, the Department of History changed its name to the Lyon Gardiner Tyler Department of History in order to honor the generosity of Lyon Gardiner Tyler's grandson, Mr. Harrison Ruffin Tyler.
