Diversifying Beauty

Dora

Our project is about exposing the western stereotype of the “ideal woman” by exploring the facets of beauty in other countries and examining how their national media outlets are impacted by Western cultural imperialism. Our world is so rich in culture, and we believe that should be embraced, especially in the United States, which is considered a “melting pot” for culture. This means that we must look past the skinny fair-skinned woman and understand that beauty comes in many forms.

We had a letter writing campaign to Cosmo expressing our disappointment at the lack of diversity in their magazine. Our second letter writing campaign was to Viacom, who is responsible for changing Dora the Explorer into a skinny teenager who now wears lipstick.
