The Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Association of The College of William & Mary invites all graduate students in the fields of Arts & Sciences to submit abstracts for the Eleventh Annual Graduate Research Symposium (GRS), to be held March 23 & 24, 2012 at the Sadler Center.  The broadly themed conference is designed to bring together graduate students from differing areas of study and from all stages of the degree process.  The congenial setting and professionally-oriented environment provides an opportunity for students to explain and discuss their research, while fostering community relationships across discipline boundaries.

Please note that all research presented at the GRS must have received prior approval from your advisor, co-authors, and the appropriate Institutional Compliance Committees.

Submission of an abstract implies a commitment to present your research at the 2011 Graduate Research Symposium.  Therefore, please make sure that you understand all of the requirements before submitting, as withdrawing an abstract after acceptance may prevent you from submitting abstracts to future Graduate Research Symposia. Due to limited room availability, if the focus of your oral presentation will not be on your specific contribution to a research collaboration or project, a poster presentation may be more appropriate for the Symposium.  Please contact the Symposium Committee if you have a question.

Each graduate student may submit only ONE abstract of no more than 1,700 characters including spaces (approximately 250 words), in one of the following categories:

1)  Natural & Computational Sciences Talk:  12 minute talks with 3 minutes for questions/discussion
(Typical Disciplines: Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, & Physics)
2)  Humanities & Social Sciences Talk:  15 minute talks with 5 minutes for questions/discussion
(Typical Disciplines: American Studies, Anthropology, History, Psychology, & Public Policy)
3)  Poster Presentation:  One hour poster session
       (All Disciplines)

First Call for Abstracts:  Monday, October 3, 2011

All abstracts must be submitted through our electronic form by the Abstract Submission Deadline:  11:59 pm EST on Friday, December 2, 2011.

Abstracts not submitted through the electronic form or after the deadline will not be acknowledged or considered.

In order to submit an abstract as a William and Mary student, you must have been admitted into a Graduate Arts and Sciences department/program.   Students enrolled in other William and Mary graduate programs or as a non-degree seeking student at William and Mary cannot submit an abstract.   William and Mary Visiting Scholars and Language House Tutors will be considered visiting presenters and must submit the required registration fee.

Graduate students will be notified of their abstract acceptance/rejection on or around January 06, 2012.

Students from institutions other than the College of William & Mary will be required to submit a non-refundable $85 registration fee that grants attendance for the presenter to all GRS presentations, any featured lectures and panel discussions, the refreshments on Friday and Saturday morning, the Friday lunch, the Friday evening reception, and the awards luncheon on Saturday.  A non-refundable guest/spouse fee of $30 is required for non-presenters from outside institutions for admittance to meal functions only (i.e., admittance to all presentations is free) .  Please make your check payable to "William & Mary Office of Graduate Studies and Research" and mail it to this address, such that it is received by February 24, 2012.

All accepted William & Mary Graduate Arts & Sciences and visiting presenters are eligible to submit a 5 - 6 page paper for award consideration!  Please go to the Awards page for details.
