How to Apply

Apply Online

Students who are unable to submit the online application should submit the paper application and recommendation forms found below in the section entitled "Apply by Mail".

For online applications, letters of recommendation must be submitted online for all programs.  Your recommenders will not be contacted until your application has been submitted online and the fee payment has been authorized. 

Supplemental application materials should be mailed to the department/program to which you are applying.  If you have submitted your application and payment online, do not send payment with your supplemental materials.

By the department's/program's deadlines, you can apply on-line by clicking Apply to The College of William and Mary or by pasting the following web address into your browser -- http://www.applyweb.com/apply/wmgrad/index.html.  Please note, there is a non-refundable application fee of $45 [payable by check or credit card] for online applications. The following information should be mailed to the department/program to which you are applying by the deadline at the address listed below:**

  • International students must also submit the Supplemental International Form.
  • The official scores for all three portions of the general aptitude GRE exam must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service. Important message from ETS: Starting on August 1, 2011, students like you on the path to graduate school will take the GRE® revised General Test. The new test is enhanced to give you many advantages including a friendlier, more flexible test-taking experience.  Please visit the ETS webpage for additional information concerning the revised General Test  http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/know. Note: If you need your scores before November 2011, you must take the current GRE® General Test before August 1, 2011. 
  • Official scores for the TOEFL exam, if you were educated outside the US and English is not your first language, must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) http://www.ets.org/toefl.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education you have attended must be provided in the institution's sealed envelope.
  • Applicants applying to the Department of History are also required to submit the History Supplemental Application form.
  • Any additional information (supplemental application form, GRE subject test scores, writing samples, etc.) required by the program.

McNair Scholars, National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellows, and individuals who have served honorably in the armed forces of the United States, are the only students who can request fee waivers when submitting the online application.  (Note:  McNair Scholar Fee Waiver Eligibility Requirement:  A letter from the undergraduate institution confirming McNair Scholar status must be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.  National Physical Science Consortium Fee Waiver Eligibility Requirement:  A copy of the letter notifying the student of his/her selection as a Graduate Fellow must be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.  Armed forces Fee Waiver Eligibility Requirements: A copy of the LES-Leave Earning Statement or DD214 must be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research).   The online application will not be processed unless the above documentation has been received prior to the application deadline.

 

Apply by Mail

Students applying by mail should arrange for the same materials to be submitted as are listed above for online applicants.

If applications or supplemental materials are being sent by courier (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc), please consult department/program for physical mailing address.

  • A completed Graduate Application form.
  • International students must also submit the Supplemental International Form.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $45.00 payable to the College of William and Mary by check or money order.
  • Three letters of recommendation [Standard Recommendation Form]. The Standard Recommendation Form must be completed by the applicant and signed and submitted by the recommender for each letter of recommendation.
  • All other required information as indicated above in Apply Online.

In-State Status

If you are claiming in-state status for tuition purposes, please complete the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Privileges and mail to the address below.
