Alumni

The Film & Media Studies program was launched in 2014 to bring together into a single curriculum the sibling programs of Literary and Cultural Studies and Film Studies. Most of our faculty were involved in organizing the earlier programs; in the same way we consider alumni of all three programs as part of a larger community of people deeply engaged in film, media, and culture in classrooms, in research, in careers, and from sheer interest. The strongest continuity running through all of our programs is our commitment to preparing students for a life of excellence and creativity as communicators, collaborators, and continuing learners.

Since the mid-1990s, the three programs combined have graduated about 350 majors. A number of our alumni have gone on to graduate and professional school at all levels of education, law and business. Other have found their way into areas like IT and energy consulting. Some have become writers of both fiction and nonfiction.

Many of our graduates hold positions in the media and entertainment business ranging from acting to location scouting, marketing to producing, production managing to editing, and camera-operating to post-production managing. Quite a few live in Los Angeles and work in the mainstream of the media industry; others are in New York City. And still others are in more far-flung locations, from Chicago to Houston to London, doing things like running media services at other colleges, producing podcasts, running post-production facilities, and working in advertising.

Each February we have the privilege of greeting the many alumni who return to W&M for the Global Film Festival, where they screen their films, offer workshops in their professional field, mentor students and enjoy the Festival program. We invite anyone coming to Williamsburg for the GFF or any other time to contact us and say hello.
