Dear Economics Alumni:

As the brand new chair of the Economics Department, one of my most pleasant tasks is to invite you to a Homecoming reception for all Economics alums and friends at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22. The festivities this year will take place in room 201 in Blow Hall (on Richmond Road). The reception is sponsored jointly with the Government department, the Public Policy program, and the International Relations program. For this year’s Homecoming, the Economics Department has designed a polo shirt. This is a little something to set us apart from all the other returning alums! We’re offering it roughly at cost. You can see the shirts and order them directly though the department using this web link: http://www.wm.edu/as/economics/alumni/homecoming_2011/index.php

Come and join all the returning denizens of Morton Hall, and we will give you an update on our projected move to a thoroughly renovated Tyler Hall. I will also give you more information about this renovation as the year progresses.

In other news, this fall we welcome two new members of the department. John Parman completed his Ph.D. at Northwestern University, and he comes to us from a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Admasu Shiferaw completed his Ph.D. at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and he joins us from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in Germany, where he was a research fellow.

Over the course of the academic year, I will talk to you about what we are doing in the Economics Department, what our future goals are, and how you can possibly assist us in reaching them.

You can also keep abreast of current events in the department by periodically sampling the information on our web site: http://www.wm.edu/as/economics/index.php

Some of that information comes directly from alumni who send us their news: http://www.wm.edu/as/economics/alumni/updates/index.php

Hope to see you at Homecoming,

David Feldman
