Rusty Blackbird Wintering Ecology

What is a Rusty Blackbird, anyway?

Rusty Blackbirds (L- female; R- male)

Rusty Blackbirds are a relatively unknown species of conservation concern that have experienced widespread decline in the last century. They breed across the boreal forest of Canada, into Alaska, and they winter exclusively in the southeastern United States. We have a large population of rusty blackbirds that winter on or near the W&M campus, making them a great study system for questions of conservation, ecology, and demography.
