Why Support Art and Art History?
| The Department of Art and Art History is committed to studying the broadest range of visual culture and creativity from diverse perspectives. All students will become conversant with both the processes and materials of the artist and the methods and scholarship of the art historian. This encompasses developing perceptual and technical skills for making art and investigating its historical significance. In the words of a recent donor to the department, we believe that "the work of the artist and art historian provide[s] perspectives on the natural world and human culture at once distinct from, yet in partnership with, those of the physical sciences and humanities in general. For this reason art is vital to a strong and complete liberal arts education". (Donor's statement, William and Mary News, November 14, 2006.) |
Your tax-deductible contribution helps us carry out the department’s educational mission. It provides our students with the honor, encouragement, and vital financial support with which to pursue their chosen field of study. It affords our faculty much-needed resources inside and outside the classroom that enable them to continue to provide first-rate instruction and research, and enhances the department’s already distinguished reputation.
What Your Gift Can Do
Your generous support of the Department of Art and Art History is more critical now than ever. It helps us attract, retain, and support the very best students and scholars, and enables us to offer the most advanced resources for the classroom, for exhibitions, and for research.
Although we continue to attract excellent students and faculty, too many outstanding students and scholars choose other institutions. The deciding factor is often economic. Merit scholarships, research assistantships, paid internships, and support for research and exhibition are essential to our success in attracting the most talented students.
To remain competitive, we need your support. You may choose to earmark your gift/contribution in any of the following ways:
- General Art and Art History fund: Supports acquisition of visual and material resources, and to bring scholars and artists for lectures and presentations that expand curricular offerings; and faculty travel to professional meetings to present papers and travel for research.
- Student research and travel fund: Supports student travel to present work at professional meetings, conferences, and exhibitions.
- Andrews Gallery Exhibition Fund: Supports the faculty and student exhibition program.
