Letter from the Chair

Elizabeth Mead

I write to extend a warm welcome to all of our alumni and friends!

It has been an exciting year for all of us here in the department of Art and Art History! As I write we are just moments away from a completing our new photography facility! It has been a long two and a half years in the making and we look forward to finally "breaking ground!" We are grateful to the deans in Ewell Hall for their support and a very special thank you to Eliot Dudik, Michael Gaynes, Michael Draeger, and Cathy Jacobs for going way beyond and above to make our new darkroom a reality!

We congratulate Brian Kreydatus on his being named the Class of 2019 Associate Professor of Printmaking and Life Drawing and also Charles Palermo on his promotion to full professor and on his receiving the Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence.

Our faculty continues to contribute exciting new scholarship and research at home and around the world. Check our website often for announcements about faculty publications, lectures, fellowships, and exhibitions.

We hope to see all of you at our Homecoming brunch Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10am in the foyer in Andrews Hall, surrounded by an exhibition of work by our seniors.

The first of our distinguished lecturers, Elizabeth Hill Boone, W&M class of 1970 will kick off our homecoming weekend with her talk "Spatial Grammars: The Union of Art and Writing in the Painted Books of Aztec Mexico" on Thursday the 13th of October in Ewell Recital Hall at 5PM.

As always, we'd love to hear your news.

All best wishes,

Elizabeth Mead, Chair and
