Letter from the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Welcome! The Fall semester is underway, and at last I have a chance to catch you up on our departmental news. Also, we hope to see you at our Homecoming celebration in October, which will be held at the Muscarelle Museum and will coincide with the opening of the studio faculty show:

Last year was exceptionally busy. We had two speakers come to campus as part of our distinguished Lecture Series: in the fall, the distinguished painter James McGarrell; and in the spring, Peter Galassi, former Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, spoke to students, faculty, and friends of the department. We also had the pleasure of hosting Gillian Pederson-Krag as our Margaret Prickett Miller (Class of 1939) Artist in Residence. Last semester two of our faculty--Professors William Barnes and Barbara Watkinson--retired. We had the opportunity to celebrate their artistic and scholarly careers with two exhibitions held in their honor at the Muscarelle Museum.

We also had three successful faculty searches. As a result we have the pleasure of introducing two additions to our faculty, art historians Alan Braddock and Cristina Stancioiu. Alan is our new Ralph H. Wark Professor and comes to us from Temple University after a stint as a Senior Fellow at the Smithsonian. Cristina Stancioiu is our new medievalist. We are also pleased to welcome Brian Kelley '07, formerly our student and now our colleague, as a visiting professor in the studio program.

Congratulations are in order for Professor Sibel Zandi Sayek on the publication of her book, Ottoman Izmir: the Rise of a Cosmopolitan Port, 1840-1880 (University of Minnesota Press).  We also want to draw your attention to three new student ventures: a Ceramics Club, An Architecture and Design Club, and a new online publication, the Spirit of the Living Watching, dedicated to the arts and art history:

	Free Lecture given by Peter Galassi Celebrated photography curator Peter Galassi was the department's latest speaker for the Distinguished Lecture Series. "Pathways In Modern Photography" discussed 20th-century photography. Describing a divergence, that occurred before the dawn of the television age, between photojournalists working for commercial mass media and independent artist photographers.
	37 Years of Painting at William and Mary: An Invitational Alumni Exhibition Organized by Painting Professor William Barnes, who will be retiring after 37 years in the Department of Art and Art History. This special exhibit in the Andrews Gallery partially overlapped with the exhibit “William D. Barnes: Three Decades of Still Life and Landscape” at the Muscarelle Museum of Art.
	Call for Funding of Undergraduate Honors Research We would like to provide each honors student with $300 for research-related expenses. The faculty of Art and Art History asks for your assistance in providing funding for this important endeavor.
