Scholarships in Art and Art History

Students are encouraged to apply for scholarship awards for the study of Art or of Art History offered by the Department. The awards are based on merit and chosen by appropriate committees. You may apply, if eligible, for more than one scholarship. A student may have only one scholarship. The Scholarship will be credited to your university account as follows: half of the scholarship award will be made during the fall semester and half in the spring semester. Each award below has its application procedure. The deadline for all scholarship awards is 5 p.m. in the Art and Art History Office on Monday, April 2, 2007. Any applications arriving after 5pm will not be considered. Announcement of awards will be made in early May.
ART
Alumni Scholarships in Art. Eligibility: current students graduating in December 2007 or later and studying Art in the Department. The scholarships derive from donations from alumni. Award is based on merit. Application consists of a statement (500 words) of how your study of Art relates to your career objectives, current transcript from BannerWeb, and letter of recommendation from one member of the faculty in Art. Application cover sheet and faculty recommendation form available in Department of Art & Art History Office, Andrews 208.
 
Joseph Palin Thorley Scholarships in Art. Eligibility: Junior concentrators and minors in Art (with the exception of Architecture). Established in 1988 with a legacy from the donor, an internationally known ceramist, the awards are based on merit. Application available in Department of Art & Art History Office, Andrews 208.
 
J. Binford Walford Scholarships in Architecture. Eligibility: Current students graduating in December 2007 or later studying Architecture in the Department. Incoming freshmen are also eligible to apply. The awards were established in 1979 with a legacy from J. Binford Walford, an architect well known in Virginia, and his wife Aurelia Behm Walford. The awards are based on merit. Application available in Department of Art & Art History Office, Andrews 208.

Martha Wren Briggs Scholarship in Art History. Eligibility: Must be a second semester sophomore or junior concentrating in Art History in the Department. Students must demonstrate strong potential for careers in Art History or in the museum field. Martha Wren Briggs is a retired art Historian and author currently residing in Williamsburg. Award is based on merit. Application consists of statement (500 words) describing your interests, achievements, and how your study of art history relates to your career objectives, current Transcript from BannerWeb, letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty OUTSIDE the Department of Art and Art History. Leslie Cheek Jr. Scholarship in Art History. Eligibility: current students graduating in December 2007 or later and studying Art History in the Department. Leslie Cheek was the Chair of this Department in 1937-39, distinguished critic, and the acclaimed Director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. Award, established in 1979, is based on merit. Application consists of a statement (500 words) of how your study of art history relates to your career objectives, current Transcript from BannerWeb, and letter of recommendation from one member of the faculty in Art History.
