Who is eligible to interview?

Any rising senior (a student who has completed the junior year) may request a summer interview and any current high school senior can request a fall interview. As evaluations will not be retained for more than one year, neither rising juniors nor rising sophomores are eligible to interview. Additionally, due to the very different nature of transfer applications, transfer students are not eligible to interview.

Who will interview me?

Most interviews will be conducted by highly-trained William and Mary students. We have selected William & Mary's best rising seniors to conduct interviews. By meeting with current William and Mary students, prospective applicants have the opportunity to learn about the value of a William & Mary experience from those who know the College best.

When are interviews offered?

During the summer, interviews are offered Monday through Friday beginning mid-June and ending in mid-August. Interviews are conducted between 9:00am and 5:00pm. During the fall, interviews are offered weekday afternoons and select Saturday mornings. Note that fall interviews are extremely limted.  We encourage any interested student to interview during the summer to better secure an appointment.  If you intend to take a campus tour during your visit, there are interview times that do not conflict with the campus tour (those times tend to fill faster).

Are interviews offered on the weekends?

During the fall only, interviews are offered on select Saturday mornings.  During the summer, interviews occur on the weekdays only.

Where are interviews held?

Interviews will take place in the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Directions to the Admission Office.

How do I schedule an interview?

Interviews can be made using an our events registration page. Interview requests will not be taken over the phone.

Is the interview evaluative?

Yes. The evaluation of the interview will be included in a student's file should he or she decide to apply to the College. There is no specific weight assigned to any component of a student's application. Therefore the interview will be assessed in the context of a student's personal qualities, which are strongly considered during the review process.

How will the interview affect my chances for admission?

The interview program has two primary goals. The first is to give prospective applicants the opportunity to add a personal dimension to their application. The second is to help applicants gain greater insight into the benefits of a William & Mary experience. An interview evaluation provides the admission staff with more information on which to base an admission decision. Because interviews are optional, choosing not to participate will not adversely affect an applicant's chances for admission.

Is the interview required?

No. Interviews are an optional component to the application. Any student who elects not to interview will be reviewed in the exact same manner as every other applicant.

What should I wear?

Students should dress in whatever they feel is appropriate. We realize that many students will be taking a campus tour as part of their visit and will need to dress comfortably.

Should I bring any materials?

Please do not bring transcripts, course schedules, testing reports or resumes to the interview. Such academic records are only evaluated during the normal application review process.

What kinds of questions will I be asked?

There are no predetermined questions. Questions will be posed in order to help the interviewer understand an applicant's interests, passions and background. Furthermore, we encourage prospective applicants to bring questions of their own.  Several W&M blogs have been written on our interviews.  Check out our Admit It! blog for a dean's perspective, and look through the blogs housed in the widget on the right-hand side of this web page for Senior Interviewers' perspectives.

Will parents participate in the interview?

The interview is designed to be an exchange of questions and ideas between a prospective applicant and a student interviewer. The daily information sessions and student-led tours provide parents with ample opportunity to ask questions of both admission officers and current William & Mary students.

Will I have an opportunity to meet with an admission counselor?

No individual appointments will be made with members of the admission staff. However, the Office of Undergraduate Admission offers two information sessions each week day and one information session on Saturday mornings. Each of these sessions is conducted by a member of the dean staff. Questions can be asked of admission officers at the conclusion of these information sessions.

Are alumni interviews offered?

At this time, alumni interviews are not offered.

Are off-campus interviews offered?

We do not offer any off-campus interviews. All interviews available are offered on the College's campus in Williamsburg, Virginia.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel my interview?

Should you need to reschedule or cancel your interview, you can contact [[kcmaccagnan, Senior Assistant Dean Kate Perry]] or the Office of Undergraduate Admission (757-221-1836). Please do not request another interview. Due to the number of requests and the "first-come, first-serve" nature of the program, we do not guarantee that an interview can be rescheduled.  When rescheduling or canceling an interview please give as much notice as possible.
