A Year in Review
2010 - 2011
During the 2010 - 2011 academic year, we have supported a number of strategies that embrace inclusive excellence both in and out of the classroom. Here we present our accomplishments for the year.
- Spring internal review of diversity programs, etc. to establish database completed.
- Development of a Diversity Education Program designed to target primarily the student population.
- In conjunction with Lambda Alliance, a new curriculum has been developed for the Safe Zone Program.
- PLUS Program in its new format was successful.
- A new peer mentoring outreach program with Newport News Public Schools, “A Day in the Life” is launched to assist in efforts to recruit more local students of color to attend WM.
- The Diversity Brunch in conjunction with Fall Career Fair brought leaders from 20 of the diversity student organizations into the new Cohen Center, each hosting a table and presenting what makes their group distinctive.
- The Diversity in the Workplace Breakfast Panel featured students, administrators, and alumni discussing diversity issues employees face in the workplace.
- The Diversity Student Employer Mentoring Program was launched, matching diversity students with alumni representatives from several employers who have strong commitment to diversity.
- With funding from 3 Corporate Sponsors, 2 Diversity Ambassadors were hired and trained who for the inaugural Ambassador Program in outreach to students across the campus.
- Implemented an Adapted Housing policy to accommodate needs of LGBTQ students.
- The Alpha Delta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered in September 2010, and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was welcomed in April 2011
- William and Mary Scholars/WMSURE.
- The College received an $866,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation that will fund three new positions in Global Studies programs.
- Lemon Project wins Image Award
- The 2nd “I Am W&M” Campaign celebrates diversity at W&M
- W&M nears partnership with Indian universities
- W&M launches new Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program
- Lemon symposium titled “From Slavery Toward Reconciliation: African Americans & The College,” aimed to explore the College’s relationship with the local African-American community.
- U.S.-India partnership draws Dept. of Education official to campus
- Kinsey family presentation: Where art, history and business intersect
- W&M hosts Virginia Indian Nations Summit on Higher Education
- W&M hosts national colloquium on minority studies
- W&M becomes ‘sister university’ with University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC)
- W&M participates in 'It Gets Better' project
- W&M celebrates religious diversity week sponsored by I-Faith
- Hayes Writers Series to celebrate life and work of poet Lucille Clifton
- School of Education book collection named for Hulon Willis Sr.
- Brafferton ceremony by local American Indian tribes
- First VIMS Hall Bonner Scholar completes Doctoral program
- Community Studies Program completes first year and two students complete senior honor theses.
- Continuing progress of a diverse undergraduate class. This fall, 28% students of color in freshman class.
- Increase of international undergraduate students to 89
- Opportunities for a conversation in Spanish on admission web page through new widget
- 22% students of color in new Law School class,
- Dedication of Law School’s Veteran’s Clinic
- New Horizons grant to provide services to veterans (couples and families)
- Possible incentives (fee waivers) for veterans to attend WM
- Hiring of new Vice Provost for International Affairs is promising for future global studies initiatives
- Student Affairs Renewal Day in January 2011 with Maura Culler. Diversity Trainer (all staff plus CAMU)
- Student Affairs ½ follow-up session with Jamie Washington, March 2011 (all staff plus CAMU)
- Strengthening Reves Hall programming to focus on global citizenship and intercultural competence.
- Fall 2011 enrollment of international students: 234 (116 Undergrads, 118 graduates). Increase in 82 students from last year.
- W&M was chosen as one of 10 institutions in the nation to participate in a federal pilot program geared toward developing and expanding educational partnerships in India (an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education). As part of the initiative, W&M hosted 2 visiting scholars from India.
- The Global Education Office (Study Abroad) updated their "Diversity Abroad" webpage to cover issues such as Gender, LGBT, Race & Ethnicity, Religion and Students with Special Needs.
