Vice President for Student Affairs Search

The College of William and Mary invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs. Chartered in 1693, William and Mary is the second oldest college in the nation. It is described as America's best small, public university (currently ranked sixth by US News and World Report) and a "public ivy," one of only eight. Undergraduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business and education enroll approximately 5,500 students. Another 2,200 are in graduate and professional programs in arts and sciences, business, education, law and marine science.

The Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) reports directly to the President of the College and serves as a member of the senior administrative staff. The VPSA supervises a broad range of services. The office oversees the Division of Student Affairs, whose mission is to develop, plan, and supervise an array of programs, services, and activities which encourage optimal growth and personal development of students; contribute to student academic and personal success and well-being; foster a sense of community which is intellectually and culturally diverse; and encourage the interaction and integration of student experiences in the classroom and into the community.

Specific responsibilities of the Division include student rights and responsibilities, general student counseling, student organizations and activities, services to students with disabilities and special needs, support for students of diverse or nontraditional experiences, leadership development, community service, student government, the judicial and honor code systems, management of activities in the student centers, residence life, wellness and recreation, career and life role development, and student health and psychological services. Staff members work closely with the administration and faculty to represent student concerns to them, as well as presenting academic and administrative policies to the students. The office also provides an important link between families and the campus. Additionally, the VPSA is the lead development officer within the division, working closely with the Vice President for Development to establish and attain fundraising goals. The VPSA coordinates three major events: Convocation, Family Weekend and Commencement, in addition to assisting with other campus-wide special events. Administrative/professional staff number 80, support personnel number 31, and graduate assistants number 24. The current budget totals $32.5 million, including all academically-related functions and auxiliary services.

Criteria for selection are as follows:

  • advanced degree (doctorate preferred)
  • at least 15 years professional experience in a university setting, including work with student affairs administration, policies and services
  • progressively increasing supervisory responsibility and demonstrated innovative leadership at the administrative level
  • demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and parents
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills and
  • demonstrated commitment to diversity.
