John Charles Thomas

John ThomasMr. Thomas received his B.A. with distinction (1972) and J.D. (1975) from the University of Virginia. He is a senior partner at Hunton & Williams, LLP, in Richmond, Virginia, where he is chief of the appellate practice group and also handles general litigation, mediation, and arbitration. In April 1983 Justice Thomas was appointed to the Supreme Court of Virginia, making him the first black and youngest justice in history to serve on that court. Justice Thomas is an AAA Complex Commercial Arbitrator and Mediator. He is a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, which handles disputes involving violations of the World Anti-Doping Code. He is a Trustee Emeritus of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello, and a Friend of the Class of 1971 of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Justice Thomas is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Virginia Bar Association, Richmond Bar Association, Old Dominion Bar Association, and American Bar Association. Justice Thomas was appointed to the Board of Visitors in 2006; he was reappointed in 2009 and 2013. Currently, he serves as chair of the Committee on Audit and Compliance and vice chair of the Committee on Administration, Buildings and Grounds; he is past chair of the Committee on Student Affairs.
