Mr. Saunders graduated from William & Mary with a B.A. in government before pursuing a master's degree in public affairs at Indiana University. He assumed his current role as Chief of Staff to the Mayor of the City of Richmond in January 2017. He began his political career as a legislative aide in the Virginia House of Delegates while he was a student at W&M and worked on several Virginia political campaigns before becoming finance director for the Democratic Party of Virginia in 2008. In 2014, Mr. Saunders was appointed by Governor McAuliffe as a Policy Advisor and Chief of Staff to First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe where he worked on agricultural policy, food security and childhood hunger, and promoting National Service. He is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute's College Leaders Program and serves on the board of Fit4Kids, a non-profit dedicated to improving children's health and wellness and reducing childhood obesity in the greater Richmond region. Mr. Saunders was appointed to the Board of Visitors in 2017.
