Mr. Capps received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina. After practicing law in Winston-Salem, he joined Carolina Power and Light in 1970 as senior counsel. Mr. Capps was elected vice president and general counsel of Boston Edison in 1974. He joined the Miami law firm of Steel Hector and Davis in 1975 and served as chair of the executive committee. Mr. Capps was elected executive vice president of Virginia Power, a Dominion subsidiary, in 1984 and was elected president of Dominion in 1986. In 1989 he was named chief operating officer. He was elected chief executive officer in 1990 and chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer in 1992. When Dominion merged with Consolidated Natural Gas in January 2000, Mr. Capps became vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of the new company and re-assumed the chairman’s office on August 1, 2000, upon the retirement of George Davidson. Mr. Capps retired as president and chief executive officer and became Chairman of the Board in December 2005; he retired as Chairman of the Board in April 2007. Mr. Capps is a member of the boards of directors of AMERIGROUP Corporation of Virginia Beach, The Shaw Group, Inc. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Associated Electric & Gas Insurance Services, Ltd., and serves as honorary life trustee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. Mr. Capps was appointed to the Board of Visitors in 2002 and reappointed in 2006. Currently he serves as Chair of the Committee on Audit and is a member of the Committee on Financial Affairs. |
